The NEWB has issued schools with copies of Developing a Code of Behaviour: Guidelines for Schools
The Guidelines were developed through an inclusive process involving people from a variety of backgrounds including teaching, child psychology, educational welfare, the law, as well as parents and young people. In order to ensure their use and relevance to schools, draft Guidelines were published in April 2007, followed by an intensive period of consultation with the Partners in Education and with services and agencies that work with children and families. The Guidelines are issued under Section 23 (3) of the Education (Welfare) Act 2000.
A copy of the Guidelines has been provided to all teaching staff, members of the Boards of Management, the committee of the Parent Associations and the Student Councils. Copies are also available for Special Needs Assistants or other members of staff.
A range of Department of Education and Science support agencies and programmes will be offered briefings by NEWB staff at regional level to enable them to reflect the content of the Guidelines in their work with schools, as appropriate.
It is the wish of NEWB that the Guidelines would provide real assistance to all members of the school community including Principals, Boards of Management, teachers and other staff members, parents and students, and that they make a positive contribution to teaching and learning in schools.
If you have any immediate queries about the Guidelines, or their use, you can send your query by e-mail to guidelines@newb.ie and we will endeavour to respond as quickly as possible.
